Greg Gets It Done
Throughout his life, Greg has worked hard to support his family, serve his church, country, and community,
and consistently uphold his conservative beliefs and values. He never stops working to GET IT DONE!!
As a State Legislator:
Greg served as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 2002-2006, representing House
District 64. Uncommon for a new legislator, Greg sponsored 35 bills and co-sponsored 181 bills, many of which
resulted in acts passed, which benefitted many counties and communities which are also in Senate District 22.
Some of his many accomplishments while serving include:
• Greg played an important role in the area response to Hurricane Ivan in 2004. He worked closely with
Governor Riley, local sheriffs, and state and area officials during the evacuation and clean-up efforts.
• In 2003, Greg co-sponsored the bill which required a picture Voter ID and was instrumental in getting it
through the appropriate committee. This bill was the first in establishing this requirement.
• In 2006, Greg co-sponsored a bill, which passed, making it a crime to disrupt funeral or memorial
services.
• In 2006, Greg was the primary sponsor of the important bill which gave County Emergency
Management Agencies additional powers for protection of the public during times of public
emergencies. This act also enabled the Governor to declare a state of emergency prior its occurring,
such as during our recent January 2014 ice storm.
• In 2005, Greg sponsored a bill, which passed, establishing the Conecuh County Reservoir Management
Authority.
• Greg was instrumental in getting the state to turn over the old Bay Minette National Guard Armory to
the city for conversion to the Bay Minette Central Firehouse Facility.
• Greg assisted the city of Atmore in its expansion of the city limits, which enabled the economic
development along the I-65 corridor.
• During his term, Greg also co-sponsored several bills which passed, enabling several other communities
to expand their city limits and increase economic development, including Bay Minette, Elberta, Loxley,
Foley, and Spanish Fort.
• In 2003, Greg voted against Amendment One, the largest proposed tax increase in Alabama’s history,
and worked to ensure its defeat.
• In 2004, Greg sponsored a bill, which passed, allowing Monroe County Employees to participate in the
State Retirement System.
• In 2006, Greg sponsored a bill for Monroe County, which passed, dealing with the administration of the
Monroe County Probate Court.
• Greg led the effort to defeat a bill introduced to give convicted felons in prison the right to vote.
• Greg was instrumental in getting Highway 113 between Flomaton and I-65 four laned, creating another
area Hurricane Evacuation Route and increasing area economic development.
• Greg played a role in setting up the Baldwin County Historical Archives in Bay Minette.
Civic Service:
• Greg has served as the City of Evergreen Municipal Judge, and as the attorney for the cities of
Evergreen, Castleberry, Repton, and Excel. He also serves on the Range Fire Department Board.
• Greg played a major role in the defeat of a local area landfill proposed by a group of New York
investors, which would have had a negative impact on the region and watershed. Greg was involved in
several capacities in the fight against this landfill, which began in late 2006 and ended in 2013.
• Greg has served on several economic boards, including the Coastal Gateway Economic Development
Board and the Conecuh County Industrial Development Board.
• Greg has served since 2006 on the USS Alabama Battleship Commission, which is in charge of the
operation and grounds.
Military Service:
Greg has had a long history of service and support of the US Military. His father and all four brothers all served honorably, as well as a son, a daughter, and two sons in law. Greg's own interest in serving began with participation in the Naval Junior ROTC in high school and continued, including:
• United States Air Force: 1973-77
• Utah National Guard and US Naval Reserves: 1977-1981
• Commissioned as a US Naval Officer in 1982 and served as a Surface Warfare Officer from 1982-1987,
serving on the USS Elmer Montgomery and the USS Wainwright.
• In 1987, Greg became one of the few Lieutenants (O-3) to serve as the Commanding Officer of the
Mobile Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center from 1987 until 1990.
• Greg completed his military service as an active member of the Naval Reserves until 2005, when he
retired as a Commander.
Education:
Education has always been important to Greg:
• Greg is a High School Graduate of Ernest Ward High School in Walnut Hill, Florida.
• Greg began his college studies while serving in the military, attending Okaloosa-Walton Junior College.
• Greg continued his college education and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Management from Weber State University in 1981.
• Following his active duty in the Navy, Greg attended Jones Law School in Montgomery, Alabama,
graduating in 1995.
Private Business Experience:
Greg has been working hard all his life, beginning with helping to support his family with a paper route at age
thirteen. Before his military service began, he also worked as an orderly at several hospitals. Since receiving
his education, he also:
• Worked for several finance companies and General Electric Credit Corporation
• Certified as an Automobile Appraiser
• Established his own Real Estate Appraisal Business
• Established his own Private Law Practice, located in Evergreen, Alabama.
